The train got to West Glacier (formerly Belton) more or less on time. I gathered my stuff and went downstairs as it was arriving. There was a girl there, early twenties I'd say, by herself with mostly just a backpack like me. I thought she'd get on the shuttle, but she didn't. There seemed to be other people around with cars, so I thought she must have had another way to get to the park. There was a couple who got on the shuttle with me, but I think they went on to Lake McDonald Lodge after I got off at Apgar Village.
I was glad I hadn't taken any luggage other than the backpack, because the motel wouldn't let me leave anything there until I checked into the room, so I had to carry everything all morning. I walked around the village and took pictures of some of the buildings and the lake and the creek, then I walked out to the main road (Going-to-the-Sun Road) and took a few pictures. Fortunately my room was ready at noon so I didn't have to wait until the official 3:00 check-in time.
After I got in the room and unloaded my stuff, I walked the bicycle trail to West Glacier and had lunch at the West Glacier Restaurant, since I wanted to try something other than Eddie's and I knew that would probably be the only day I'd have time for that walk. It's a little under 3 miles, mostly level. There was a bear sighting on the trail just after the trail crosses the road, so they had the trail closed and bicycles and pedestrians had to use the road. I didn't see the bear.
After I got back to my room I took a shower and then wandered around Apgar Village taking more pictures, mostly of the view looking north along the 10-mile length of Lake McDonald and the mountains beyond (too many pictures to post all of them). Lunch was big enough that I didn't really have dinner, just a small carton of chocolate milk. I spent some time in the chair outside my room reading the book I had brought along (Blue Highways by William Least Heat-Moon, a book about traveling). When the bugs became annoying I went inside. It rained for a few minutes at some point. I went to bed at 10:00, which is about when it got dark.
